What is HRA Exemption?

House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a component of your salary provided by employers to cover your rental expenses. Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, salaried individuals living in rented accommodation can claim full or partial tax exemption on HRA received. The HRA Exemption Calculator helps you determine how much of the HRA you receive is tax-exempt and how much is taxable.

Why Use an HRA Exemption Calculator?

Calculating HRA exemption manually can be confusing due to multiple conditional limits. This calculator:

  • Applies current income tax laws automatically
  • Helps optimize your tax filing
  • Assists in deciding rent declarations for tax saving
  • Provides clarity on exempt vs. taxable HRA portions

Who Can Use It?

This tool is designed for:

  • Salaried employees receiving HRA
  • Tax consultants preparing client ITRs
  • Individuals planning to rent and want tax clarity
  • HR or payroll teams validating exemptions

HRA Exemption Formula

The least of the following 3 values is exempt from tax:

  • Actual HRA Received
  • 50% of basic salary if residing in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai); otherwise 40%
  • Rent paid minus 10% of basic salary

The remaining HRA (if any) is taxable as part of your gross income.

How to Use the Calculator

  • Basic Salary: Your annual basic salary (excluding HRA)
  • HRA Received: The total HRA received from your employer annually
  • Rent Paid: Actual annual rent paid for your accommodation
  • Metro City: Choose "Yes" if living in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai)

Example Calculation

  • Basic Salary: ₹5,00,000
  • HRA Received: ₹2,00,000
  • Rent Paid: ₹1,80,000
  • Metro City: Yes

Calculation:

  • Actual HRA received: ₹2,00,000
  • 50% of basic salary: ₹2,50,000
  • Rent paid – 10% of salary: ₹1,80,000 – ₹50,000 = ₹1,30,000

HRA Exempt: Least of ₹2,00,000, ₹2,50,000, ₹1,30,000 = ₹1,30,000

Benefits of HRA Exemption

  • Reduces overall taxable income
